Coach's Clipboard] [Home]

Set up the lines at one side of the field going across the width.
The player with the ball passes to the foot of the player directly across and then sprints to the end of the line 3 - 5 yards from the last player in line. Player 2 receives the pass and passes the ball to 3, and sprints to the end of the line 3 - 5 yards from the last player in his/her line. Player. 3 receives the pass from 2 and passes across to 4 and so on. End with player 1 receiving the pass from 8.
Emphasize passing accuracy and timing. Each player should deliver a crisp and easily handled ball to the next player before sprinting to the end of the line. Once they have completed the drill in one direction, have them do it in the opposite direction. Switch starting sides so that everyone gets to give the diagonal pass.
Alternatives:
Use a one-touch passing method. Have the players go across the entire width of the field before going in the opposite direction. Spread the width of the lines to 15 - 20 yards and practice lofting passes.
Change the drill from a passing drill to a throw-in drill. Set the players 3 - 5 yards apart along each line and 5 yards across to the second line for U6-U10, and 10 yards for U12-U18. After each throw the players stay where they are. Player 1 makes a throw-in to Player 2. Player 2 receives the ball, traps and passes to Player 3. Player 3 makes a throw-in to Player 4 who receives the ball, traps and passes to Player 5. And so on down the line. Reverse direction with the same line and then have the other line make the throw-ins.
Heading - The coach starts the ball by tossing to Player 1 who heads the ball to Player 2 who heads the ball to Player 3 etc... Follow the same pattern as the previous examples with or without the sprinting to the end of the line. See how far they can get before losing control of the ball.
