Finishing / Shooting Drill

Task: for the attackers - finish before executing 7-10 passes; for the defenders - gain possession and make 7-10 passes

Purpose: direct attacks, group play

Complexity: complex

Standard 5v4 Attack

Description: The keeper boots the ball at a "pack" of

attackers gathered close to each other. The attackers

are allowed to break up immediately after the punted

ball lands. Simultaneously, four defenders (starting by

twos at the corner flags) enter the pitch trying to gain

possession and complete 7-10 passes. Inversely, the

attackers are required to score before making 7-10 passes.

Explanation: This drill provides a good introduction

to the overall concepts of defense and offense. The attackers are required to spread out whereas the defenders must maintain a compact shape.

Alternative:

Use a 5v3 attack. Composure under pressure.

Using the same distribution technique, the defenders are clearly outnumbered and must demonstrate the ability to cover each other while maintaining a “zone” type of formation, buying time until help arrives.

Attackers must use crossing passes to score or an end line pass back out the middle or top of the penalty box; trying to keep within the 7-10 pass requirement.

If there has been no score within 1 minute, add the 4th defender from behind the attackers or from the sideline.

Objective:

Buying time while out numbered is one of the most stressful situations for defenders. Whether help was out of position or overrun by the attack, defenders must maintain their composure, delay the attack (destroy the attack if possible) and wait for help. Explain the defensive advantages or disadvantages in using the “V”, “Flat Line”, and “Nearest to the Ball” formations in this situation. see examples.
